ThoughtLab — a preview of a site in this style

ThoughtLab

An obsidian monument with a crimson signal. A canvas of black emptiness, where the only saturated red object in the cathedral, printed in large white letters, is a single chromatic figure.

ThoughtLab operates like a Black Cathedral design language: a blank black canvas, a single red pulse, and typography so large it functions as architecture. The system is almost entirely achromatic—#cccccc represents the body, #ffffff represents the display—with #fc1c46 appearing only for a single primary action, as a controlled surge of tension against a background of emptiness. Hierarchy is built through sharp scale jumps (198px → 14px), rather than through color, shadows, or fills. Components are weightless: transparent cards, pill-shaped buttons, thin input fields, the absence of elevated stacking—the page breathes through negative space and densely packed uppercase, rather than through containers.

A dark canvas spans the entire width of the page, with wide horizontal margins (126px on each side, pushing the content column to approximately 1400px). The header is a single 72px line: the logo on the left, the tagline in the center, the pill-shaped call-to-action button, and the hamburger bar on the right. The hero is a divided composition—an oversized 198px headline in all caps on the left with supporting body copy 18px below, while a 3D sphere overlaps the text to the right of center, partially "eating" it. Below the hero, sections are arranged in a spacious vertical rhythm with 86–108px gaps between them. The elements of the work are displayed as a list, occupying almost the entire width of the page, rather than as a grid of cards. There's no sidebar, no mega-menu, no footer with a column grid—the footer is a single, quiet line with copyright information and contact information #4c4c4c. Navigation beyond the header launches as a hamburger menu in a full-screen overlay.

Images are sparse and intentionally curated. The dominant visual element is a large sphere of obsidian liquid, rendered in WebGL—a dark, almost black, 3D shape with subtle blue and amber reflections along the edge, floating against a black background and partially overlapping the title. It functions more as brand iconography than illustration. Project thumbnails are displayed as photos or videos in a vertical list, presented edge-to-edge without a border. No lifestyle photos, no stock images, no decorative gradients. The sphere and type are the only visual elements on the page.

Palette

Brand

  • Crimson Signal #fc1c46 — The main accent is a single red element; it appears on the "Contacts" tab, in the brand logo, and nowhere else. Its rarity is due to the design's specifics.

Neutral

  • Void #000000 — The page background, the canvas, is the absolute foundation on which all other elements float.
  • Ash #cccccc — Main and link text, default text tone on black canvas - chosen instead of pure white to soften optical glare.
  • Frost #ffffff — Displaying headings, button text, input field text, and markup is the most prominent level, intended for content that should be linear.
  • Graphite #4c4c4c — Copyright, meta tags, auxiliary text - intentionally muted so as not to compete with the main text.

Typography

  • sui — replacement: Space Grotesk (closest free geometric match) or Inter for a more neutral alternative. Neue Haas Grotesk Display if licensed. · outlines 300, 400, 500, 700 · A single font. Sui is a custom-designed geometric sans-serif font used for everything from 198px for headlines to 10px for captions. The 700 weight is reserved for monumental headlines and large titles; the 400 weight is used for the rest of the system. The contrast between bold and regular is the primary font system; a second family is not required.
